George and the Prikkers
Some things do happen and then you simply forget to write about it. So we are going back in time a wee bit.
Two weeks ago the Mister came across a thread in a forum about a gathering of Land Rovers. Since my tire problems were sorted, distance was no longer an issue.Did I mention the tires? These are not the new ones, they be fitted on the 18th of April. Bless that day… No, for now I still have the Mud tires and it turned out the rims were dirty (how did that happen?). Dirt between the rim and the tire causes it to deflate slowly. The boys (or actually one man) at Profile cleaned, greased and refitted the four tires and it works beautifully.
Anyway.., the gathering of Land Rovers. It sounded like heaven and the Mister made every effort to attend. This consisted of communicating with other enthusiasts and owners (who call themselves “ Prikkers“), arranging to meet them along a predefined route and installing a newly purchased CB Radio for on-road communication.
Even the meeting points and the route were programmed into the route planning device.
Everything was planned, checked, organized, considered and taken into account. Nothing could go wrong.., we were prepared. Even the Misses had become enthusiastic.
Sunday morning and I am waiting. 9 o’clock was determined as our time of departure. This would mean that the Mister would wake me and would start packing about half an hour before. 9 O’clock came and went.., nothing…
A big scream, and some swearing, came from HQ when the church bells started chiming. They do this for the 10 o’clock mass and only for the 10 o’clock mass.., and not more then 20 minutes before mass. So that would mean the time is 9:40 pm! What happened?
Daylight saving time is what happened. We overslept, or at least M&M did.
Every thing was taken into account for this day of days and now we were late.., too late.
Luckily the Misses, yes the Misses, was determined to not let the day be wasted. This was a good thing. We loaded up, started the engine and took of via the preplanned route.
A complimentary tailwind ensured a steady speed of 110 km/h. With the music thumping and the tires humming we made good time and a couple of kilometers before the last exist we saw them…, the Land Rovers. A convoy of more then a hundred cars dawned in front of us. We had caught up with them, we were not too late.
Over the CB Radio we announced our arrival and were greeted with a welcome response.
George had arrived and was part of the Gathering.
In the end 260 Land Rovers had made it. I was parked in the middle, surrounded by kinsman and people who carry nothing but love and adoration for the marquee. It was truly beautiful. What an experience.
It turned out some automobile enthusiast was taping an item for a TV-show. I was filmed as well.., off course. Some of you will see me on TV.
Be seeing you…
George
